Brandon Weatherz: Trending warmer after tonight

January 19: Trending warmer after tonight

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

We’re approaching the finish line of this cold snap, but we aren’t there quite yet. Our Friday starts with a Wind Chill Advisory for Lake County and Cook County in effect until noon with wind chills approaching -30. Air temps begin below zero in minus single digits and teens. Scattered flurries may bring a light dusting through the morning, but accumulating snow focuses along the South Shore. A localized inch or two is possible near the tip of the Bayfield Peninsula, but the greatest accumulation will be east toward North Iron County and West Gogebic County where an additional 3-6” is expected today and tonight. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for these counties until 9 am Saturday.

High temperatures stay near zero along and north of the Iron Range today while the rest of the Northland tops off in single digits. Skies start mostly cloudy, then we’ll see peeks of sun in the afternoon. Clearing skies tonight will set the stage for one more frigid overnight period. Most areas will fall into minus teens and the coldest areas of northern Minnesota could see -20s. The South Shore snowbelt will stay near and above zero thanks to lake effect clouds and snow. With a northwest wind around 10 mph factored in, wind chill values near -30 are possible tonight and Saturday morning.

Saturday starts our warming trend with highs in upper single digits to teens across the Northland under sunny skies. Lows stay a couple degrees above and below zero Saturday night. Sunday sees highs into mid-teens to low 20s with a breezy southwest wind and partly sunny skies. The warming trend we’ve been talking about for next week is still on track. We look to the Canadian border for light snow chances Sunday night into Monday, then the North Shore could see lake effect snow Monday night into Tuesday. Tuesday also features a more widespread chance for light snow.
