Brandon Weatherz: More cold and South Shore snow

January 18: More cold and South Shore snow

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

Today’s weather will be quite similar to what we saw yesterday, and we’ll copy-and-paste once more Friday with bitter cold and localized South Shore snow as the main contenders. Continue to keep pets in, limit time outdoors, and limit exposed skin. Air temps have fallen below -20 near Ely this morning. Much of the rest of the region begins our Thursday with minus single digits and teens. Lake and Cook County’s Wind Chill Advisory lasts until 10 am with frostbite in as little as ten minutes in the coldest conditions. Highs mostly manage single digits today under a mix of clouds and sun.

Thicker clouds hug the South Shore where areas of flurries linger. The lake effect machine gets kicked on again by a wind shift out of the northwest this evening. Iron County is in a Winter Weather Advisory from 6 pm Thursday until 9 am Saturday. Expect 4-6″ for North Iron County and West Gogebic County with locally higher amounts possible. Amounts fall to 1-3″ moving southward in Iron County and west near the Ashland County border. Northern Bayfield County may also see a localized 1-3″. The rest of the South Shore stays under an inch in this timeframe. Apart from lake effect, periods of flurries tonight into early Friday morning may bring a light dusting to the rest of the Northland similar to what we’ve seen a few times this week.

Tonight will be partly to mostly cloudy with lows in minus single digits to minus teens. Friday is another day with partly sunny skies and highs in single digits. Wind chill will be a concern one last time Friday night as air temps fall into minus teens widespread with -20s in the coldest areas of northern Minnesota. Saturday is sunny with highs in single digits to teens. A warming trend takes hold from then on with a more comfortable stretch of above average temperatures next week.
