Brandon Weatherz: Scattered flurries and bitter cold

January 16: Bitter cold and scattered flurries

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

Dangerous cold is once again the main weather concern this morning. Our Tuesday starts off with wind chills across the Northland around -20 to -30, which can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Keep pets indoors, limit time outside, and limit exposed skin. The Wind Chill Advisory will expire at noon. An additional Advisory may be needed tonight with wind chills returning to -15 to -20. We’ll gradually put the coldest air and strongest winds behind us after today, but we’ll have to continue to practice cold weather safety through the week as temps consistently bottom out below zero and top off only in the single digits.

Air temps are in single digits and low teens below zero this morning, then they climb to only a couple of degrees above zero for much of the region today while the Iron Range and north still stay a degree or two below zero. Our Tuesday is mostly cloudy with scattered flurries. Accumulation for most areas will be only a dusting staying under an inch. The exception is the Bayfield Peninsula where an additional 2-5″ will fall today and tonight, keeping the Winter Weather Advisory in effect here until 6 am Wednesday. The greatest accumulations will be in the higher terrain and in the northernmost points of Bayfield County.

Tonight will see temps back in single digits to low teens below zero. Clouds may break up a bit, with the exception of the South Shore where localized lake effect snow will persist. Wednesday sees highs back above zero across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, but we’ll still only top off in single digits under a mix of clouds and sun. We’ll stay rather quiet and similarly cold to end the week. A wind shift to the northwest will give the South Shore snowbelt another period of lake effect Thursday through Friday night. The weather pattern will finally shift over the week with highs back in the low 20s for Sunday, then a stretch of above average temps will bring relief from the cold next week.
