It’s a messy Monday with a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Travel becomes slick in the morning with ice accumulation initially, then that ice will be covered in light snow accumulation. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for South St. Louis, Carlton, and Pine Co. in Minnesota and all of northwest Wisconsin through this evening. These are the areas with the greatest ice accumulation.
Duluth is on the edge of potential for as much as 0.1” of ice. As much as 0.25” is possible generally near and south of Wisconsin Highway 77. Light ice accumulation is possible for much of north central Minnesota and the Arrowhead where a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until midnight. The greatest snow accumulation will be locally along the North Shore where 6” is possible, leading to a Winter Storm Warning here until midnight.
Widespread snow accumulation of 1-3” extends from Ely across Virginia to the Twin Ports and south into Washburn County, then east of that line. West of there will stay under an inch. 3-6” potential reaches into much of Lake and Cook County and along the South Shore.
The wintry mix envelops the Northland through the morning with ice accumulating. The mix turns to snow from the west in the afternoon and evening. Snow exits to the east by around midnight. Tuesday will be sunny and comfortable with highs in the mid and upper 30s. A round of light snow accumulation returns to the region on Wednesday. As of now, the chance for 1-3” stays south of the Twin Ports. Expect minor winter impacts for any travel toward the Twin Cities on Wednesday.
