The warmth and sunshine from the weekend spills into the start of this new week. A warm wintry system brings a combination of rain and snow to the region beginning Tuesday and ending Wednesday, with lake effect lingering along the South Shore into Thursday. Temperatures fall during the day Wednesday and we’re left with highs in teens and 20s to end the week. We rebound nicely on the warm side of average for a quiet weekend.

Tuesday will feature rain moving into the region from the south in the morning and afternoon. Snow will enter the mix from the west in northern Minnesota in the late afternoon and evening. The Twin Ports and east won’t see the transition to snow until after midnight into early Wednesday morning. As temperatures fall below freezing Wednesday morning, wet surfaces could become icy and coated with light snow accumulation. Blustery northwest winds will also be present on Wednesday. Snow moves east through the morning and afternoon with the South Shore snowbelt keeping Lake Effect chances through Thursday morning.

Accumulation will be light for much of the region due to the slow transition from rain to snow. The exception is north Itasca, Koochiching, and North St. Louis Co. where a widespread 3-6” is expected and locally higher amounts are possible. The line for this potential may shift further south across the Iron Range depending on how the temperatures and precipitation types trend. A general 1-3” is expected in most areas as of now, but these amounts are also subject to change.
