Brandon Weatherz: Sloppy system today into tomorrow

December 15: Wet and sloppy system today into tomorrow

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

Despite being the 15th day of December, it’s a day for the raincoat and umbrella rather than the snow boots and shovel. We start our day with scattered rain and temperatures in mid-30s to low 40s. These temps are similar to what highs will be as we stay rather steady. Some mixed winter precipitation is possible at times, but rain will be dominant for most through the afternoon. We’ll see snow mix in and take over tonight into Saturday morning.

Temperatures in many areas will still hover near freezing overnight, further limiting accumulation potential. 1-2” of slushy snow is possible reaching along the high terrain areas of the North Shore, near Duluth, and into Carlton County. Similar accumulation is possible in a swath from near Brainerd to Grand Rapids. The rest of northeast Minnesota stays under an inch, including lower elevations in the Twin Ports and up the North Shore. Much of northwest Wisconsin now looks to avoid any accumulation altogether with less than an inch reaching from northern Bayfield County across Douglas County.

Snow generally starts as the precip type Saturday morning, then rain mixes back in as showers thin out for most by noon. Highs will be in mid-30s to low 40s. Sunday sees highs in low to mid-30s with mostly cloudy skies. A cold front passing brings the chance for snow and minimal accumulation to northern Minnesota Sunday evening and overnight, with lake effect snow directing the chance for 1-3” along the South Shore snow belt where snow may linger through Monday morning. Highs Monday will be cooler in the upper teens and 20s, then we’ll be back in a milder stretch for much of the rest of next week.
