Brandon Weatherz: Back in the 30s today and 40s tomorrow

December 13: Back in the 30s today and 40s tomorrow

Daily forecast from the Storm Track Weather Team

An area of flurries have skirted across Northwest Wisconsin overnight into early this morning. These continue to exit to the east through the morning with cloud cover eroding from the west. The stubborn clouds have kept temps here near 20 overnight, but clearing across northern Minnesota has allowed temps to dip into single digits along and north of the Iron Range. This chilly start for some is short-lived as we enter a stretch of consistently above average temperatures starting today and lasting into next week.

Our Wednesday shapes up to be mostly sunny with highs in low to mid-30s. Lows stay in the 20s tonight under mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Cloud cover and darker skies thanks to the recent new moon should cooperate nicely with viewing the Geminid meteor shower. The meteors radiate from near the bright star Castor in the constellation Gemini. Visibility could begin in the evening and peak around 2 am. As many as 120 meteors per hour may be seen.

Thursday is the warmest day in the forecast with highs reaching into the mid-40s across the Northland. It will also be sunny with a breezy west southwest wind. Temps stay near and above freezing Thursday night into Friday morning with cloud cover increasing. Rain and wintry mix begins in northern Minnesota after midnight, then rain will gradually mix with snow from the north through the day Friday and lingering Friday night into early Saturday morning.

As of now, warm surface temps are still expected to melt much of what falls with minimal accumulation and travel impacts expected. Once the light snow and mix tapers off Saturday, we’ll enter another dry stretch. Temperatures will stay mild with highs topping off above freezing each day through next Wednesday.
