The track for today’s snow has shifted to the west, raising expected totals for areas that have been on the fringe of accumulation potential. A Winter Storm Warning now fills out northwest Wisconsin, including Douglas County, from 6 am until midnight. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Pine County in east central Minnesota and for Lake and Cook County where a widespread 2-5” is possible. The rest of the North Shore and the Twin Ports are currently in the 1-3” range.

Amounts increase quickly as you move into Wisconsin, with 6” potential beginning near a line from Dairyland to Poplar. A widespread 6-10” fills out much of northwest Wisconsin and Gogebic County. The bulk of accumulation will fall by 6 pm, allowing travel to quickly become difficult this morning and remain difficult through the evening.

Snow exits to the northeast overnight, then additional snow showers will linger near the Canadian border during the day Wednesday. Lake effect snow will be directed along the U.P. by a blustery west wind that will allow for patchy blowing snow across the Northland. Winds will be sustained 20-25 mph with gusts near 40 mph. Winds will also add a chill to the air, while highs stay only in mid-teens to mid-20s.

Thursday will be quiet, then the next round of accumulating snow arrives from the north Friday afternoon and overnight. It may be another round worthy of the shovel, especially looking north of Duluth. Snow tapers off early Saturday, but we’re left with a cold and blustery day.
