A system crossing the Northland today will be responsible for wintry mix transitioning to snow, strong winds, and a blast of cold air. Temps begin mild in the 20s, then highs range from 29 near International Falls to mid and upper 30s in east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect generally north of U.S. Hwy 2 in Minnesota starting at noon and lasting into early Saturday morning. Expect travel to become slick with a light glaze of ice possible, followed by snow accumulation of 1-3”. Gusty winds will allow for blowing snow and times of visibility less than a half mile.

Snow of around an inch is expected in the Twin Ports area and much of the rest of the region. The exception will be northern parts of Douglas and Bayfield County where a gravity wave may lead to localized accumulation up to 4”. We look to parts of Iron and Gogebic Co. for 3-5” where lake effect chances persist through Saturday morning.

Winds are another concern tonight. A Wind Advisory begins at 10 pm and lasts until 8 am Saturday for the North Shore, South St. Louis County, and Carlton County where sustained winds will be 20-30 mph and gusts approach 50 mph. With this added to morning lows in single digits above and below zero, wind chills will range from -10 to -25 across the Northland Saturday morning.

Saturday remains cold and blustery with west winds gradually falling from around 20 mph in the morning to near 10 mph in the evening. Highs stay in single digits to teens with partly cloudy skies. We climb back into 20s on Sunday with mostly sunny skies. Next week will feature a few fast moving weather systems rolling across the region to bring the chance for light snow accumulations and additional blasts of cold air.
