The worst of the winter storm is behind us, but as it continues to spin our region, additional snow lingers today, tonight and tomorrow. Cooler air is starting to move into the Northland, leading to two changes in regards to the snow. For one, snow ratios will be more typical, providing relief from the wet heavy stuff. The second is that the air is now cool enough for lake effect snow.

Lake effect potential will follow the winds. An east wind persists this morning, allowing locally heavier snow to set up along the North Shore and Head of Lake Superior. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 10 pm. Expect a localized 2-5” in higher terrain areas of Carlton and South St. Louis County, and 3-6” along the North Shore. Apart from lake effect, scattered light to moderate snow showers will bring a trace up to 2” across the rest of the Northland through Saturday. Localized amounts closer to 3” are possible in a swath from the Iron Range extending down the I-35 corridor.

Winds develop out of the northwest tonight and Saturday, directing lake effect chances along the South Shore. These winds begin to carry colder air into the region. Lows will fall below zero starting Sunday night and highs will trend near zero by the middle of next week. Wind chills ranging from -10 to -30 will be possible. The cold will be accompanied by additional lake effect chances for the South Shore, particularly Tuesday and Thursday. As a region, there’s a chance for light fluffy snow Monday and Wednesday.
