A cold front will move south of Lake Superior today with improvements to air quality from the north, cooler temperatures, and a few strong storms possible for southern communities. The Air Quality Alert in northern Minnesota is set to expire at noon with impacts to sensitive groups in the meantime. We look to Pine, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, and Price Co. for thunderstorms this afternoon and evening with an isolated storm capable of 1” hail and 60 mph winds. Skies are otherwise partly cloudy with highs ranging from low to upper 70s.

Tonight is clear and cool with lows in mid-40s to low 50s. We may even dip into low 40s in the typical cool spots. Thursday will be quiet and comfortable with highs in the 70s once more. Widespread rain returns from the west Thursday night through Friday morning, then additional showers and thunderstorms are possible Friday afternoon and evening. It won’t be enough to bring relief from the drought, but it’s the best chance we have for a couple tenths of an inch as a region. Heavy rain and locally high totals will be possible.

As for the weekend, Saturday has a low chance for rain, mostly north of the Twin Ports. Sunday and Sunday night will be another potential widespread accumulation event, if we’re lucky!
