Brandon Weatherz: Rain follows a cold front today into tomorrow

Another warm and sunny day lies ahead before we trend cooler behind a cold front. Highs range from upper 70s to mid-80s, and dew points once again stay comfortably in the 50s. We look along the Canadian border for shower and thunderstorm chances this afternoon and evening. Of those initial storms north of the Iron Range, an isolated storm may be capable of large hail and damaging winds. Rain chances follow the front as it moves southward across northeast Minnesota and toward northwest Wisconsin overnight into early Wednesday morning.

A stray shower remains possible in east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin Wednesday, but the better chance for showers and storms is pushed south of the Northland with the front. Highs tomorrow range from low to upper 70s under partly cloudy skies. The cold front will also help to move wildfire smoke into the region today and out of the region to the south tomorrow. An Air Quality Alert is in effect across northern Minnesota from noon today until noon tomorrow with air quality expected to be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The Tuesday into Wednesday round isn’t expected to bring much relief in the form of widespread accumulating rain. It’s possible that a more beneficial round of moisture arrives Thursday night and lingers Friday, but this would still be a far cry from what is needed to bring relief to the drought. Saturday’s rain chances stay north near the Canadian border, then a more widespread chance for showers arrives Sunday afternoon and evening. Highs will be near to below average over the weekend.
