Brandon Weatherz: Trending cooler and wetter this weekend

We trend cooler today, especially near Lake Superior with highs in the mid-70s for shoreline communities and a high closer to 70 immediately by the water. Highs inland are in upper 70s to low 80s for most, with a high near 85 from Brainerd to Siren. It’s a dry day under partly cloudy skies.
The east wind also brings dangerous swimming conditions and a high risk for rip currents. A Beach Hazard Statement is in effect through the day, and it’s possible another one will be needed for our Saturday as the east wind lingers. Highs tomorrow will be in upper 70s to low 80s inland with cooler conditions once again found near Lake Superior.
We finally have some rain on the way this weekend. Shower and thunderstorm chances build across north central Minnesota from the west through Saturday afternoon. A wetter period will be Saturday evening and overnight as rain extends east to the Twin Ports and across northwest Wisconsin. Rain lingers Sunday and gradually moves eastward to exit the Northland by Sunday night.
Heavy rain and high localized totals are possible. A widespread 1-1.5” is expected for much of northern Minnesota. 0.75” to 1” is expected for the Twin Ports and across the North Shore. Accumulation falls looking east into Wisconsin, but around 0.5” is still expected here.
