Brandon Weatherz: Fog for some, heat for others

Areas of fog prove to be stubborn locally today, then widespread fog returning tonight may impact the Thursday morning commute. A Beach Hazards Statement is also once again in effect due to a high risk for rip currents in Lake Superior. A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 7 pm for Pine, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, and Price Co. with heat indices up to 98°.

The temperature difference in the region won’t be as dramatic as yesterday because areas in northern Minnesota like the Iron Range that stayed in mid-60s yesterday will warm into mid and upper 70s today. It still warms as you look south with mid-80s reaching along and south of a line from Brainerd to Hayward. All the while, the Twin Ports and other shoreline communities will continue to stay in the 60s as an east wind is with us yet again. It’s also another muggy day with dew points ranging from near 60 by the lake to low 70s where the Heat Advisory is in effect.

Tonight will be cloudy and foggy with a chance for scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder, but little to no accumulation is expected. Lows range from mid-50s to mid-60s. Showers exit eastward across northern Wisconsin Thursday morning, then cloudy skies will gradually break up through the day. Lake influence will still be a factor in temperatures, but it will be much weaker than it’s been so far this week. Highs range from mid-70s to mid-80s.

Friday will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms, and a few storms may be severe with 1” hail and 60 mph winds as the main hazards. Heavy rain will also be possible. Highs will be in low 70s to low 80s. Saturday will be cool and quiet with highs staying in low to mid-70s across the Northland, and an east wind returning to keep shoreline communities in the 60s. Temps return to mid-70s Sunday with mostly sunny skies. Widespread rain chances return Sunday night and Monday.
