Winter is here in the Northland, and that means winter sports are back in full swing. However if you want to get into them but don’t have the right gear. Well, the UMD Rec Center has you covered.

“We got plenty of outdoor gear that students and the community members around Duluth can rent out. Anything from ice skates to skis, snowshoes, ice climbing gear, any kind of camping gear, we have it,” said Senior Rec Center employee Michael Stansberry.

The rental area is located inside the Sports and Health Center on campus in room 154, and isn’t just exclusive to the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) students, but also anyone in the area. Even those with little too no experience.

“The biggest thing is we want to be able to teach people and educate people on how to use our gear. So when they’re renting it out, we want to demonstrate that to them. We also have programs like outdoor trips throughout the semester, and next semester they’re going to kick off some new things,” added Stansberry.

The center is currently closed for the holidays but open again from January 3rd through the 10th, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. With 30% off regular priced gear, helping you hit the slopes for less.

“This last snowfall was like super exciting for me because I love snow and I’m a skier. I was out in the snow right when it had fallen. So that’s that’s what’s so excited for me. I can just get out there and have fun,” added sophomore Rec Center employee Micah Hanson.

“That’s kind of the biggest reason why I want to work here is because we’re able to maintain and educate people on how to use the equipment and where to go around the Duluth area,” concluded Stansberry.
