Justin Liles: A busy weather week

We are looking at a rather busy week here across the northland. There is a small chance of a light wintry mix tonight but nothing will stick. The biggest threat comes Wednesday. A strong fall storm will bring rain and a chance for thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday, changing over to snow late Thursday into Friday. Strong northeast winds and large waves on Lake Superior are also expected.

One of the biggest concerns will be the transition of rain to snow and the potential for accumulating freezing rain. As of today, the biggest threat looks to be the Iron Range to Grand Portage. These areas could see over a .25” of ice from Thursday morning to Friday morning. Any ice that does fall could lead to some power outages. If this system should happen shift south, the freezing rain chances shift as well. Along with freezing rain, heavy snow is possible up north along the international border too. Some areas may see over 6” of snow. In addition, it is going to be windy too. Road conditions will likely be difficult Thursday and Friday.
