After an impressive four win stretch the University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) men’s tennis team clinched the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) North Division title. Winning the North in 2023, and the UMAC regular season title in 2022, this marks three straight conference crowns for the Yellowjackets.

“It took us all to work as a team. Especially with tennis, if one person has a good day and one person doesn’t, you’re not going to get anywhere. You all have to be on the same page and working together,” senior Jacob Zacharias said.

“I’ll say this, last month going into the end of our season, we decided that we should take this even more seriously, and I believe that this team really decided to put the work in. We’re just, I would say, collecting the prizes of hard work,” sophomore Igor Guetten Chaves said.

Chaves also attributed their success, in part, to their older and more experienced roster with many team members 20 years or older. Senior Jacob Zacharias went 6-0 last weekend, sweeping Crown and Bethany Lutheran, to earn UMAC North Player of the Week.

Plus, the Yellowjackets are led by now fifth year head coach CeeJay Schaffner, who last Sunday earned his 100th career win with the women’s team.

“Obviously, we went through some tough years to start with COVID, and it’s just been amazing to see the process and just the growth from year to year. So, no year has been easy. There’s been different challenges every year, and it’s just been fun to overcome those challenges and just get to that milestone,” Schaffner said.

UWS closed out their regular season Friday hosting UW-Eau Claire. The UMAC tournament is May 3-4 in St. Louis, Missouri. For details, Click Here.
