Up North: Superior Police Department host floor hockey game for kids

With the outdoor rinks melting recently, local Superior kids headed to the Douglas County YMCA, for floor hockey with the Superior Police Department.

“We started this several years ago just for a chance for kids. It’s community policing event where the kids come out and meet some police officers in a fun setting, which is a lot of, you know, what we like to do,” said Joel Markon, a Superior Police Detective.

It’s an event that has been going on the last three years, but was originally founded by a good friend of the police department, ‘Big’ Mike Almond, who passed away last May.

“Mike Almond was a community member. He was friends with the police. We did a lot of stuff with him here at the YMCA. Unfortunately Mike passed away last year from some health problems, and the YMCA was good to keep this going and we have some donations and stuff so there’s food for the kids afterwards,” added Markon.

The event consisted of well over 30 kids, all enjoying shooting and scoring, along with having a chance to not only meet but showcase their dangles against the local officers.

“It’s really fun because my two brothers and my friend Anthony’s here, And yeah it’s just really fun,” said Landon Modeen, a seventh grade YMCA member.

For the superior police officers though, the event is all about giving back to the community.

“Yeah, that’s what it’s all about right, it’s a time for the police to come out and hang out with the kids in a non-normal police setting. Maybe some kids that normally don’t hang out at the YMCA right, we like to incorporate them into this to,” concluded Markon.
