The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s hockey team will be losing highly touted assistant coach Derek Plante.

He not only is returning to the NHL, but also the Chicago Blackhawks as their assistant coach.

Plante is familiar with Chicago, as he was the Blackhawks player development coach from 2015-20.

As part of the UMD staff he helped the Bulldogs to three NCAA tournaments, two Frozen Fours and a title in 2011.

His son Zam Plante, is not only verbally committed to UMD, but was drafted this year by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
