State Volleyball: Grand Rapids falls in semifinals, Ely advances to consolation championship

On Friday the Grand Rapids volleyball team fell in the Class AAA state tournament semifinals, while Ely picked up a win in round one of the Class A consolation bracket.
No. 4 Grand Rapids fell 3-0 to No. 1 Marshall at the Xcel Energy Center. The Thunderhawks will next play No. 2 Kasson-Montorville for third place Saturday 4:30 p.m.
In Class A, Ely topped Pine River-Backus 3-1 to improve to 30-1. They’ll battle No. 4 Badger/Greenbush-Middle River in the consolation championship Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
