Prep Football: Northwestern & Hayward win season openers, Superior falls at home

On Friday night the first snaps of the 2023 prep football season were taken in Wisconsin. Northwestern took to the road visiting Ashland, renewing their nearly annual Highway 2 rivalry.
The Tigers went hunting for their 14th straight rivalry win, and the Oredockers their first since 2007. The game didn’t go in the Oredockers favor as the Tigers snagged their victory with a final score of 36-6.
A Heart O’North Conference clash was held at Hayward as they battled Cumberland for the first time since 2019. The Hurricanes scored the first touchdown, going on to win the game 21-14.
Over in Superior, the Spartans kicked off their season for the second straight year against Wausau West. The Spartans had a 3-0 lead with less than two minutes until halftime when Wausau West scored the first touchdown of the game. The Spartans fell in the end 24-3.
