Van Wieren lifts No. 8 UMD women's hockey past No. 10 St. Cloud State

On Friday the No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women’s hockey team defeated No. 10 St. Cloud State University 1-0 at AMSOIL Arena. The victory secured UMD home ice advantage for the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) postseason tournament.

The game-winning goal came at the hands of Clara Van Wieren in the third period. After two scoreless frames Van Wieren would score off an Olivia Wallin assist at the 4:33 mark of the third, scoring her fifth game-winner of the season.

The Bulldogs were kept in the game by goaltender Hailey MacLeod. The sophomore tallied 39 saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season. The Huskies’ netminder, former Bulldog, Jojo Chobak recorded 28 saves.

UMD improves to 18-11-2 overall and 15-10 in WCHA play. Their series finale with St. Cloud is Saturday at 3:01 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena. That will also mark UMD’s regular season home finale.
