Hermantown boys basketball stifled late in near upset over No. 2 Orono in Class AAA state quarterfinals

The Hermantown boy’s basketball team was stifled late in a near upset over No. 2 Orono falling 84-82 in the Class AAA state quarterfinals Tuesday at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

Abe Soumis led the Hawks with a commanding 34 points, while Blake Schmitz added 24 points. Orono’s Isaiah Hagen led the game with 35 points.

This marks Hermantown’s second straight state appearance, also falling in the quarterfinals last season.

Hermantown (22-7) will now tip-off the consolation semifinals Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Concordia University. They’ll face Stewartville, who fell to DeLaSalle 71-66 in their quarterfinal. For the bracket, Click Here.

No. 4 Cherry will tip-off the Class A tournament Wednesday battling No. 5 Border West Buccaneers in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. at Williams Arena.
