The people have been heard: the yellow University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Bulldog mascot update is gone.

UMD announced in a news release on Tuesday that they are returning to the previous gray Champ for the 2022-2023 school year.

This all comes after the yellow Bulldog update, designed after the UMD Standing Champ image, was released on Thursday and met with backlash across social media platforms.

The Athletic Department is still working to update Champ’s look, however this time they plan to “build an inclusive process to update the Champ costume”, according to the release.

UMD posted that they are looking to build a committee of students, alumni, fans and supporters to “gather input and examine several concepts for the Champ costume.”

The committee’s main goals will be to select a new Champ that honors the history and tradition of the mascot, considers modern enhancements such as cooler features for the performer’s safety, and aligns with the maroon and gold brand.
