Now a senior at Proctor High School Josh Monreal initially played baseball, before joining the track and field team just last spring.

Immediately he found success qualifying for state in shot put in 2022, then this spring he qualified for state in both of his throwing events claiming the Section 7AA title in shot put and discus.

His skills earned him a nomination for the 2023 Minnesota Mr. Track and Field award.

“In my time as head coach this is the first time that we’ve had an athlete make it this far, get nominated like this,” Nate Johnson said, head coach of Proctor track and field. “His leadership and just his work ethic has really changed our program. We went from maybe half-a-dozen throwers to 15 throwers now.”

Monreal is committed to continue his throwing career at the College of St. Scholastica.

Jackson Thompson of Moose Lake/Willow River is also a Mr. Track and Field nominee, and Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin’s Emmalee Oviatt is up for 2023 Minnesota Ms. Track and Field.

Winners will be announced Sunday after the state tournament, which begins Thursday at St. Michael Albertville High School.
