A Hibbing man has just published the book Minescapes Reclaiming Minnesota’s Mined Lands.

Pete Kero is an environmental engineer at BARR Engineering in Hibbing.

He told us this all started because he was encouraged to share the history behind the land at the Redhead Mountain Bike Park in Chisholm.

So he researched the history of mineland reclamation. And Minescapes was born!

“It’s vignettes, a series of vignettes at various points in time, telling the state of the art of mineland reclamation. Going back to early 1900s, and every few decades piece of the story that gets added,” Kero shared.

He told us it’s not a comprehensive list of the whole Range. But he wanted to highlight some of the more notable points.

“I hope it adds to the story of mining, and the life cycle of mining. After it’s completed, how we can bring the land back into productive use again,” Kero said.
