Throwback Thursday: Tunnel v. Lift Bridge

Twenty years ago, WDIO Reporter Steve Long looked into the alternate plans for Duluth’s most famous landmark. It almost wasn’t a bridge at all but a tunnel.

City reports from 1891 show plans for building a tunnel underneath the canal rather than a bridge over it.

In a WDIO report from 2003, former city engineer said there was “sticker shock” after seeing the price of building a tunnel, so they went back to the plan for a Lift Bridge.
