Minnesota Fishing Opener 2023 is just two days away. And on this day in 1973, anglers were learning the difference between leeches and bloodsuckers and starting to ramp up their use of leeches as bait.

“A bloodsucker’s often real soft and pulpy. A leech is real firm,” a bait distributor said. “And I don’t know why, but the leech works much better for bait than the bloodsucker.”
