The Sugar Shack in Virginia not only offers sweet treats but caffeine, breakfast, and lunch too.

Owner Erin Powell has seen the business grow with a 2022 move into downtown Virginia and the opening of a seasonal ice cream shop.

It started as a hobby in 2017, and by 2018, it was a full-time job. In 2019, she opened her first location in a mall.

Powell said it means a lot when people support her small business because it stems from her home.

“It was a hobby, and now I have probably about 21 employees. In the summer with my other location, I’ll be up to 25-28. So I think I’m giving people jobs,” she said. “I have a family of six children, so I think it’s just great to have this we built from nothing.”

The Sugar Shack is open Mondays through Saturdays.
