Jerry Gibson grows some giant pumpkins on his property in Sturgeon Lake. And two of them are now carved and on display at Pier B in Duluth.

Gibson said his goal this growing season was to beat his personal best for heaviest weight, and he did that. The pumpkins at Pier B weigh 1,442 and 1,534 pounds.

Mike Rudolph spent two days at the hotel carving them. He said to “let the pumpkin tell you what it wants to be.”

“This one here didn’t have a good three points of contact on either the stem or the blossom end to prop it upright like your traditional jack-o-lantern. So what we like to do with it then is figure out, well, what can we do with it as it sits?” Rudolph said. “So I thought maybe it would be nice to have a circular mouth like some sort of a big monster with fingers and stuff coming in towards it.”

The carved giants will be on display through Halloween at Pier B.
