You can get just about any kind of food from a food truck, including wood-fired pizza.

Log Home Wood Fired Pizza has both a brick-and-mortar shop in McGregor, Minn., and a food truck and food trailer.

Rick and Nancy Herman own the business. Rick said it started when he left public education in 2012 after 30 years of that career.

“We started looking for other things to do. Found a mobile wood-fired pizza company online and started talking to the owner of that company,” Rick Herman said. “What better job than one where you get to play with food and you get to play with fire?”

He and Nancy went to Boulder, Col., for a training course where they learned both the business side and the process of making good wood-fired pizza. They bought the truck in 2014.

Nancy Herman said there’s something different about pizza cooked this way.

“Especially after the oven’s been cured, it gives it a chance to just give that extra special taste and just that wood-fired feeling,” she said.

Rick “the Northwoods Pizza Man” comes up with most of the recipes, although they also open up contests for customer concoctions too.

“All of our ingredients are freshly prepared,” Nancy said. “All the sauces are homemade. The meats are prepared fresh. And we use … Burnett Dairy cheese for our five blend. It’s a fantastic pizza blend as well as their mild cheddar.”

Log Home Wood Fired Pizza does events like grad parties and weddings and can be frequently spotted around Duluth. Some of their regular locations include:

  • Mondays – Duluth Cider
  • Thursdays – Wild State Cider
  • Fridays – Bent Paddle Brewing

They post a schedule weekly on their Facebook page and website.
