Expedition to find Major Bong’s crashed aircraft

80th anniversary of the Richard I. Bong plane crash

The Richard I. Bong Center is organizing an expedition to search for the famous Lockheed P-38 Lightning “Marge” plane that crashed in Papa New Guinea.

The Richard Bong Museum has announced an expedition to find the fighter plane assigned to America’s top World War II ace. It comes on the 80th anniversary of the New Guinea crash.

Major Richard Bong’s fighter plane is one of the most famous aircrafts of World War II. His Lockheed P-38 Lightning is named “Marge” after his girlfriend and features his picture.

Pacific Wrecks, a U.S.- based non-profit, will be go on the expedition to crash sight.
