Water emergency near Pier B, one man rescued

One man was rescued from Lake Superior near Pier B Thursday morning, thankfully with no major injury.

Duluth Fire crews were dispatched to 800 Railroad Street just before 8:30am. Duluth Police, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, the Sheriff’s Department, and the US Coast Guard also responded.

The 47-year-old man was found in the water, clutching the remains of the old Pier D. The Coast Guard was the first to make contact, pulling him from the water. The man was taken to the hospital for possible hypothermia treatment. Authorities say it appears he had no other injuries.

“Thanks to the collaboration and cooperation of DFD, DPD, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department and Rescue Squads, Mayo Ambulance, and USCG, this person received swift attention that will lead to better outcomes for them,” said Assistant Chief Dennis Edwards in a statement.
