A longtime umpire from Hibbing had an unexpected moment at the recent softball tournament.

They surprised Babe Glumack with a plaque and decision to rename the Red Ore Rumble after him. It’s a large softball tournament in Hibbing.

“I am a softy, so I got a little teary-eyed,” he told us. “I’m very humbled, very honored.”

He’s been umping for 54 years now. But still strives to do his best. “I still go home and watch games and still learn.”

The best part of the job is meeting people and catching up with them.

When he’s not umping, he’s a ref for basketball games, coaching the Mesabi North Hibbing Cardinals softball team, or teaching officiating.

“The problem is we aren’t seeing young people get into this,” he explained.

Another fun part of the experiences is seeing kids build their confidence. “If you go out there and work hard, good things are going to happen,” he told us.
