The Gemstones honor AfroGeode at 25th annual Homegrown Music Festival

The Gemstones performed at the DECC during the 25th annual Homegrown Music Festival Tuesday night. This event was a special one, as the band paid tribute to their late singer-songwriter and founder, AfroGeode during their 8pm set. The group tragically lost their beloved band member in early April 2023. The soul- jazz- funk group took the stage and played several of her songs, both honoring and celebrating her life and legacy. The band also stated that they have no plans of stopping the musical group and want to help her spirit live on.

AfroGeode, also known as Diona Johnson, was a social justice activist and musician in the Duluth community. Those who knew her said she strived to build a better community through music and advocacy.
