Superior Fire stresses importance of working smoke detectors after Wednesday fire

Fire crews are reminding people about the importance of working smoke detectors in homes, after a Superior resident was displaced Wednesday afternoon due to a fire.

Superior fire crews were dispatched to the 1900 block of John Avenue just after noon. The fire was reported by someone passing by, who saw smoke coming from the home. Smoke and flames were found coming from a basement window.

No one was inside the home, so crews forced entry. A pet cat was located and revived on scene, later taken to the Superior Animal Hospital for emergency care.

Damage is estimated around $30,000, and the cause is under investigation. Fire crews had to shut off utilities to the home, so the single resident is unable to stay there at this time.

The Superior Fire Department reported there were no working smoke detectors in the home, and is reminding residents to have a minimum of one detector on each floor.

Aside from the cat, no other injuries were reported.
