Silver Bay’s Minnesota Veterans’ Home are preparing for their Memorial Day service, which will be open to the public. The Memorial Day service was not available the last couple of years during the COVID-19 pandemic. The service is at 1:30pm and there will be local public speakers and everyone is welcome.

Randall Walz, the public relations coordinator for the Silver Bay Minnesota Veteran’s Home talked more about the Memorial Day service. “It provides care for those up in this area so they can stay close to the communities.” Walz said. “The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has made an effort to try to have a veterans home within 200 miles of everybody. And that’s with our three new homes. And so Silver Bay really serves this area. So from Duluth to International falls, from Grand Rapids, Ely and Grand Marais. It’s a wonderful region and we have just tons of support in this area.”

Brian Wegerer, a retired Air Force veteran talked more about what people should be thinking about for Memorial Day. “Before you go celebrate and have cookouts that this is a somber time and moment that’s for the day.” Wegerer said. “Veteran’s Day is totally different. You can thank a veteran because we’re still you know, we’re still alive and well. Even the ones who died are veterans, clearly. But they went above and beyond.”
