Project Joy donates $25,000 to Union Gospel Mission for second year of summer food bags

Project Joy continues supporting kids in the summer through Union Gospel Mission

Project Joy dropped off a $25,000 check to support summer food bags for kids.

A big day at Union Gospel Mission, with a $25,000 donation from Project Joy.

The money will support a second year of the Project Joy summer food bags.

Bags are pre-packed with easy to prepare foods to help families over the weekends. They’re distributed to community partners that have youth programs.

Katie Hagglund, executive director of UGM, said, “We had great, overwhelming support and positive feedback from kiddos taking bags home. We were distributing 150 bags each week, and this year we’re expanding to Carlton County. And our goal is to send 300 bags each week into the community.”

Project Joy was founded by the Plys family. Laura Plys said, “To see it doubled is amazing.”

Deb Roach, a Project Joy volunteer, explained, “This money comes from the House of Hearts Charity Bonspiel, where people come from all over the world to play and fundraise.”

Hagglund said they are still open to helping more community partners. And businesses can still sponsor bags.

The bags will start heading out in June, and go through 12 weeks this summer.
