Progress on the seawall project continues, mild winter helped out

Seawall project moving along smoothly

A look at the progress on the seawall project behind the DECC.

Crews continue work on the nearly $19 million dollar seawall project behind the DECC.

The mild winter made for smooth sailing during the winter months.

Erik Birkeland, Property and Facilities Manager, shared, “We’ve got all the sheet pile in, 1200 feet of it, from near the blue bridge to the entrance of Bayfront. We’re starting to pour concrete now.”

The plan is to be mostly finished by the end of this year, with dredging of the harbor expected this fall.

It will include a cruise ship terminal, plus plaza space for visitors to enjoy.

This has been a problem spot for flooding, and the design of the seawall will protect the infrastructure better.
