National Bike to School Day with Congdon Park Elementary

Congdon students walk, bike and roll to school

National Bike to School Day is held the first Wednesday in May, but Congdon Elementary students held off a week and took advantage of nice weather.

Congdon Park Elementary joined students across the nation as they walked, biked, and rolled to school. It’s usually held on the first Wednesday of May, but this year’s celebration was held on the 8th. Luckily, weather was clear for the event.

The school promotes physical activity and bike safety through this event. Congdon Park PTA Katie Benzinger tells WDIO, “They don’t have gym everyday in school anymore. So, if you can incorporate physical activity into our daily routines, like walking and biking to get to school, kids are just better prepared for the day.”

Students also got a donut as a treat from Super One when they got to class.

The event was organized by the Congdon Parent Teacher Association. They hope Bike to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for biking and walking to school.

There is a 20-mile-per-hour speed zone on Superior Street by Congdon Park Elementary. The PTA wants to see pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure around Duluth school. MnDot has funded a grant for ISD 709 to hire a Safe Routes to School coordinator.
