Man pleads guilty in double homicide in Babbitt

Roger Allen Beldo, 54, pleaded guilty to two counts of Intentional Second-Degree Murder in the death of two people in Babbitt on Wednesday. Clifford and Christine Johnson were killed at their home on October 28, 2023. Beldo had been living with the couple at the time.

According to the report, Beldo traveled to Duluth after the murders, and made multiple emergency calls requesting help because he had done some “really bad things.” Beldo was arrested and charged in November, 2023 and confessed to murdering both victims.

“While a guilty plea is an essential step towards legal closure and accountability, we recognize that it will not mitigate the emotional pain or lessen the sense of loss experienced by the loved ones of Clifford and Christine Johnson. Our thoughts go out to them,” St. Louis County Attorney Kim Maki said in a statement.

The St. Louis County Attorney’s Office thanks the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the Babbitt Police Department, the Duluth Police Department, and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for their hard work and dedication in the investigation of this matter.

Sentencing is scheduled for August 5, 2024.
