Man, dog killed in fire near Gunflint Trail

The lives of a man and his dog were lost in a fire late Wednesday evening.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office says responding crews responded to 11 Poplar Creek Drive in the mid-Gunflint Trail area, finding multiple structures engulfed in flames. The fire was called in to first responders at 10:58 p.m., crews were on scene at 11:29 p.m.

50-year-old Curry Richard Thompson and his dog were both victims of the fire.

In a statement, Sheriff Pat Eliasen said, “it is absolutely devastating to lose a life to fire and our sympathy is with the family of Curry Thompson.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and the investigation has been turned over to the Minnesota State Fire Marshall.
