Justin Liles: Meteor showers tonight, Warmth tomorrow

December 13th: Warmer Thursday

Warmer Thursday

High pressure is well under control, and we are seeing temperatures warm again. Breezy southerly winds will push warmer air into the upper Midwest. Many highs Thursday are expected to climb well into the 40s and a stray 50 is not out of question too.

Clear skies tonight will allow us to see a fantastic astronomic phenomenon. The Geminid meteor shower—arguably the year’s best display of “shooting stars”—should peak around 1 a.m. central time on December 14th. Look to the northeast toward the constellation Gemini and away from city lights. This means that observers in North America have the best chance of catching a flurry of meteors in the pre-dawn hours on Thursday, December 14th. But it’s worth looking for meteors in the evenings of both Wednesday, December 13th, and Thursday evening, December 14th.

As we head into the weekend, we may see some rain turning over into snow late Friday into Saturday. Temperatures still looks too warm for any significant snow, but early morning travel could become slick. Most of the snow is likely going to stay north of the Iron Range. The arrowhead could see some higher amounts too. However, by then the winds will be off the lake so over night lows won’t be too cold. Currently, this weekend looks like a wintry mix with more emphasis on rain.
