Justin Liles: A hot weekend is coming

Despite how dry our weather is, there is a potential for some light rain tonight. There isn’t much expected as our drier conditions will likely limit the amount of moisture that hits the ground. High pressure tracking south through middle third of the country will create a ridge of hot air over the upper Midwest this weekend. Our highs will likely skyrocket this weekend. We’re likely to see temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

The last time we had 90° to start of September was in 1984. Sunday will be hottest day of the weekend. This will likely be a record setting day with daytime highs plus heat indices could approach 100° Sunday. Triple digit heat is not common in the Northland. Duluth has only recorded three 100° or more days ever. All three of them were in July. Now, these are actual temps and not heat index. So, the chance at 100° is very rare. It does look as if we may see some thunderstorms returning late Tuesday into Wednesday.
