Hibbing residents to vote on a sales tax referendum for new public safety center

Funding would be for a new public safety center, which would house the fire department and police department under one roof.

We are six months away from election day. And on the ballot in Hibbing will be a 1/2 percent sales tax referendum.

Funding would be for a new public safety center, which would house the fire department and police department under one roof.

The fire hall is 60 years old, and has had maintenance done to it. But the concrete blocks that make up the structure are failing, and there are considerable water leaks.

Chief Erik Jankila explained that they have also outgrown the space.

“The trucks and ambulances in 1964 and 1974 were smaller than they are now. If we replace our ladder truck it would not fit in this building,” he said.

The location of the proposed new center has not been finalized.

$10 million dollars in state bonding money has been secured. The total cost of the project is about $30 million.

City leaders estimate the average Hibbing resident would pay $31 a year with the tax, with visitors and others also paying. It would not be permanent.

Mayor Pete Hyduke shared that the this center became a priority several years ago. “Our city is 186 square miles, but we also respond regionally. And we need 21st century facilities.”

The city is hosting an open house next Tuesday, the 14th, from 5-7pm, at the Fire Department Headquarters. 2320 Brooklyn Drive, Hibbing.

You’ll have a chance to tour the space and ask questions.
