First laker on the move, shipping season is nearly underway

On Wednesday, the Baie Comeau became the first laker to move from its winter berth.

She is loading iron ore at the CN ore docks, before heading down to the Soo Locks.

The locks open on Friday at 6pm, which is a few days earlier than the traditional March 25th. The Army Corp of Engineers made the decision to open early, after urging from the steelmakers.

Eight vessels spent winter layup in the Twin Ports.

Also, the 41st Annual First Ship Contest, co-sponsored by Visit Duluth and the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, is underway. The entry deadline is tonight at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. Learn more or submit your guess here: https://visitduluth.com/firstship/
