Duluth’s Best Bread is expanding to Superior

The family-owned French-German bakery opened its first store in 2015 in Lincoln Park and its second store in 2022 downtown.

Like their downtown Duluth store, this will be a bakery-cafe where people can sip on an authentic Italian-style espresso and eat a croissant, or pick up fresh baguettes for the day. The bakery is serving its entire product line of French-German baked goods.

“We tested the waters with a little pop-up this March,” co-owner Robert Lillegard says. “Then Superior came out in a HUGE way and blew away our expectations. That made the choice really clear.”

The bakery will open May 28 and be open Tuesdays through Sundays, 7 am to 2 pm. Superior fans who want the products before then aren’t out of luck. Mama T’s Smokin Eats, Bucktales, and Aces on 29th carry the company’s German pretzels, and 2540 Coffee carries its cookies. In addition, the second Thursday of each month, the company delivers Taste Tester Boxes to homes in Superior. People can sign up for the boxes online.

One thing that won’t be changing is the company’s name.

“People ask us–will you be Superior’s Best Bread?” Robert says. “We’re going to be like Seattle’s Best or Milwaukee’s Best. The name stays.”

Co-owner and brother Michael Lillegard says keeping the name actually makes things easier.

“It’s a more defensible claim,” he says. “We don’t have to prove we’re the best bread in Superior, too, just in Duluth.”
