The Event Director for the 50th Anniversary Slumberland American Birkebeiner unveiled the four plans, during a Facebook live Q&A, that event organizers currently have in mind for the ski race as the Northland contends with unseasonable warmth.

The first plan is to continue preparations with a regular Birkie in mind for February 24.

Plans two and three would see shifts to alternative race plans; one being a long loop race that begins and ends at the Birkebeiner trailhead and the other being a lap race at the Birkebeiner trailhead.

If weather does not cooperate at all, explained Event Director Kristy Maki, then cancellation would also be on the table.

“Right now, the long-term forecast is looking more favorable than that, so we’re really hoping that we’ll land with one of the long loop or lap races,” said Maki. “We’re going to ask for your patience for a little while as we try to figure out what those schedules look like.”

Maki went on to say that a final decision will be made by February 12.
