Boy falls through ice and drowns

A six-year-old boy is a dead after a falling though the ice on Sunday.

At 1:36 p.m., the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call.

He fell into waist deep water near a dock on small lake. Officials say it was normal used as a skating rink- but was covered in snow.

A family member pulled him out of the water, but he was not breathing. They started CPR.

When first responders arrived to the rural McGrath location, they continued lifesaving efforts. The 14” of fresh snow made things difficult, and a snowmobile was needed to transport the boy.

The name of the child will not be released until family has been notified.
