Barnum student injured in assault, school on brief lockdown

A 14-year-old girl is in custody following an incident at the Barnum School on Tuesday morning, according to the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office. The report came in just after 9:00 a.m. that a student had allegedly assaulted a classmate with a knife at the school.

According to the report, Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find both students with school staff. Deputies were told that a 16-year-old boy received a cut on the chest by another student. Authorities say school staff gave a box cutting tool the was allegedly taken from the girl.

Barnum School officials activated their lockdown procedures, and staff made sure everyone was safe.

The report says the 14-year-old female was arrested and transported to the Arrowhead Juvenile Center in Duluth pending felony 2nd degree assault charges. The victim was transported to a local hospital via a private vehicle to receive care for a laceration received during the assault.

The Carlton County Sheriff says the assault was an isolated incident and there is no additional danger to the Barnum students or community. They were assisted by the Barnum School staff and Essentia Health.

The incident remains under investigation.
